Wind deal helps Intuit power HQ with renewables

Business and financial software company Intuit Inc. is moving to 100% renewable energy for its global headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., with the help of a new supply transaction.

The agreement with Renewable Power Direct LLC will provide the company with clean power from a 38-MW wind farm located within 60 miles of Intuit's headquarters, according to a Feb. 2 news release. The wind deal aligns with Intuit's broader corporate sustainability strategy; in 2016, Intuit Chairman and CEO Brad Smith said the company had achieved carbon neutrality for its worldwide operations through a three-pronged strategy of boosting energy efficiency internally, investing in renewable energy and buying carbon offsets.

The new transaction, according to the release, creates an auditable contract and scheduling path from Leeward Energy's Buena Vista Wind Farm to Intuit's headquarters. The physical power will be supplied by Pacific Gas & Electric Co.'s distribution system, though each megawatt-hour consumed by Intuit will be supported by physical renewable wind power from the Buena Vista wind farm and the associated concurrent renewable energy credits.

Intuit's CEO also outlined a number of its other efforts toward reducing its carbon emissions in its most recent sustainability report, such as the addition of energy efficient buildings that include LEED-certifications and several that feature rooftop solar installations; launching a comprehensive carbon offset program; and reducing its carbon footprint by using less packaging and offering online and cloud-based products and services.
