Azenta Adds Solar, EV Charging, Efficient Lighting

Azenta, Inc., a provider of life sciences solutions, made significant progress on its ESG initiatives, including the commitment to lower its environmental footprint by aligning its GHG emissions reduction targets with the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).

The company also set short-term emissions reduction targets, committing to reducing Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 55% by 2033 from a 2022 base year, according to a statementAzenta also committed to reaching net-zero GHG emissions across the value chain by 2050.

The company launched the BioArc Ultra, an -80°C Sample Storage System engineered to prioritize energy efficiency and sustainability, and partnered with EcoVadis® to assess and monitor the sustainability practices of its suppliers.

As published in its annual Environmental, Social & Governance  report, Azenta sourced renewable electricity for over 50% of its 2023 usage through renewable energy credits (RECs) and energy attribute certificates (EACs).

At its Indianapolis, Indiana facility, which serves as its primary sample storage biorepository, the company entered into a renewable energy credits program with its electric utility provider, which effectively offsets 100% of its non-renewable electricity consumption at the location.  Azenta's Manchester, U.K., facility also sources electricity from 100% renewable sources.

At the Waltham, Massachusetts, genomic services laboratory, the company installed LED lighting with daylight harvest sensors along the windows that automatically adjust the lighting when the sun comes up.

Additionally, at its facility in Suzhou, China, the company installed solar panels, LED sensor lights and a centralized intelligent system to help control energy usage.

Azenta installed electric vehicle charging stations at its Wotton, South Plainfield, and Suzhou facilities and plans to add more in the future. The Suzhou building, which opened in 2022, also offers electric bike charging.
