Clarkson University campus powered by 100% RE

Clarkson University’s Potsdam campus has officially met all of its power needs with renewable electricity thanks to an agreement announced Jan. 29, which will account for over half of the university’s electricity needs.

The agreement with Brookfield Renewable is one step the university has made toward its goal of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. This move alone is expected to reduce total campus emissions by more than 15%.

While Brookfield Renewable will contribute between 50% and 60% of the university’s total electricity, the balance of Clarkson’s electricity demand is supplied by hydropower from the New York Power Authority and the village of Potsdam and the 2 MW solar system on the university’s property.

“Brookfield Renewable is pleased to partner with Clarkson University to provide clean, reliable, renewable power that supports the local economy,” Marco Talamo, Vice President of Brookfield Renewable, said in a statement. “Thanks to our abundant in-state supply of hydropower, we’re ideally positioned to provide solutions for customers like Clarkson University that seek to achieve ambitious renewable energy goals.”
