Advanced sensor market for commercial buildings to surpass $1B in 2016, study finds

The market for advanced building sensors that are key to increasing energy efficiency is rapidly expanding and expected to reach the $1 billion threshold this year, according to a new report from Navigant Research. In addition to optimizing lighting and HVAC systems, intelligent buildings also support more comprehensive business and financial strategies, the study found.

"Advanced sensors are the critical data streams to intelligent building management systems that generate actionable insight for operational and energy efficiency," Casey Talon, senior research analyst with Navigant Research said in a news release. "These devices help transform how commercial facilities are managed and can also increase energy efficiency, operational efficiency, occupant satisfaction, safety, and more."

According to the research, global advanced sensor revenue is expected to grow from $1.2 billion in 2016 to $3.2 billion in 2025. This trend is being fueled by “factors such as an aging workforce, changing expectations from tenants and employees, and new pressures on sustainability and efficiency,” the report finds.

Key players in the advanced building sensor and building automation markets include: Airtest Technologies, Enlighted, Esensors, Gas Sensing Solutions, Infrared Integrated Systems (Irisys), Melexis, Nest Labs, Panasonic Electric Works, Thermokon Sensortechnik, ULIS, Weber Sensors, Distech Controls, Honeywell, Ingersoll Rand (Trane), Johnson Controls Inc., Schneider Electric, Siemens Building Technologies, Daintree Networks, Digital Lumens, Lutron, WattStopper/Legrand SA.
