Verizon, GM among C&I names that earned 2016 Energy Star recognition

About 150 business and organizations - more than 60 of which are classified as C&I companies - were recognized by the U.S. EPA and DOE for achievements in energy efficiency with the announcement of Energy Star's 2016 winners March 29.

The stories of two commercial and industrial names that earned Energy Star's "Partner of the Year Award" were highlighted in a news release from the EPA and the DOE announcing the winners: Verizon and General Motors.

Verizon, according to the announcement, certified 32 Verizon Wireless stores in 2015, for a total of 206 Energy Star certified buildings nationwide. Headquartered in Folsom, Calif., Verizon also promotes energy efficiency awareness among customers and employees as a pledge driver for "Change the World with Energy Star," and in 2015 pledges by Verizon employees and customers represented avoided greenhouse gas emissions of more than nine million pounds.

General Motors achieved a nearly 6% reduction in energy use at its U.S. manufacturing facilities compared to 2014, the EPA and DOE said. GM has also implemented a climate protection strategy that drives energy management low carbon energy procurement and product design.

"This year's Partner of the Year Award winners prove every day that saving money and protecting the environment go hand in hand," EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy said in a statement. "From major household brands to school districts, these leaders deserve to be congratulated for their commitment to reducing carbon pollution and protecting our climate."

The EPA and DOE said Energy Star and its partners have helped prevent more than 2.4 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, and in 2014 provided more than $11 billion in societal benefits due to reducing damages from climate change. The awards will be presented at an event in Washington, D.C., on April 13.
