Report: Johnson & Johnson inks 100 MW wind deal

Johnson & Johnson has agreed to purchase 100 MW of wind power from a project in Texas, Bloomberg News reported Sept. 16.

The  New Brunswick, N.J.,-based healthcare giant signed a 12-year power purchase agreement to buy half the output from a 200-megawatt wind project under development by EON SE, Johnson & Johnson's global energy director told the news organization.

Earlier this year, Johnson & Johnson announced plans to cut its absolute carbon emissions by 20% over the next four years and reduce emissions by 80% by 2050. As part of that effort, the medical, pharmaceutical and consumer goods producer said it would source 20% of its electric needs from renewable resources by 2020, with the ultimate goal of powering all of its facilities with clean energy by 2050.

"We want to use our spending power to drive change," Jed Richardson told Bloomberg. "To have healthy people, we need a healthy climate."

Johnson & Johnson expects the 100 MW from the Colbeck's Corner project near Amarillo, Texas, to provide the equivalent of about 60% of Johnson & Johnson's electricity consumption in the U.S., and 25% globally,  Bloomberg reported, adding that the company said it is now aiming to produce or procure 35% of its electricity from renewable-energy by 2020, and all of it by 2050.

The Texas project is expected to begin operations later in 2016.
