Hasbro sets renewable energy, carbon neutrality target

Toy and board game company Hasbro Inc. is ready to pass go: The company has set a new 100% renewable energy use and carbon neutrality goal across its owned and operated global operations.

The Rhode Island-based company that owns board game classics like as Monopoly, Clue and Guess Who said June 14 that it achieved its previous goal of 100% renewable energy and carbon neutrality in the U.S. This new goal, according to the company's news release, builds on that achievement and extends Hasbro's commitment to 100% renewable energy and carbon neutrality globally.

To-date, Hasbro says it has purchased more than 25,699 megawatt-hours of renewable energy certificates to address 99.6% of its 2016 global electricity consumption. The company also purchased carbon offsets in 2016 to address its global carbon footprint.

"Through renewable energy advancements, Hasbro continues to demonstrate our deep commitment to the environment and our desire to play a leadership role in building a safe and sustainable world for future generations," Chairman and CEO Brian Goldner said in a statement. "We embrace our role in supporting the transformation of our world to a low-carbon economy, and support programs that not only minimize our impact on the environment, but also have a lasting positive impact on our planet."

The company purchased its RECs — stemming from a mix of renewable resources including wind, solar, biomass, landfill gas or hydroelectric sources — and carbon offsets from 3Degrees.
