Alabama Power, Walmart solar project starts up
Nearly 18 months after initially announced, through a long-term contract with Alabama Power.
According to a Jan. 2 report from Alabama NewsCenter, the 72 MW project has begun generating power for the Southern Co. utility subsidiary, which will be retiring the majority of the related renewable energy credits on Walmart’s behalf. Alabama Power has previously said it will market the remaining RECs to other customers who have an interest in renewable energy.
According to Alabama NewsCenter, the project is operated by Clenera and was built by Swinerton Renewable Energy. Alabama Power reportedly has a long-term power-purchase agreement with the primary owner of the facility, Centaurus Renewable Energy, to receive all of the project’s associated energy and environmental attributes.
In a prior statement, Walmart's senior director of energy praised the cooperation of Alabama Power in getting the deal through, characterizing it as a milestone. Walmart has an ultimate goal of utilizing 100% renewable energy to power its global operations, and recently became the first retailer with a verified science-based target emissions-reduction plan.
