Lindt Chocolate partners with Eversouce to reduce energy usage

Lindt Chocolate USA has formed a partnership with Eversource in an effort to reduce electricity usage and costs by nearly 3.5 million KWh a year at its Statham, NH plant.

The company expects to "reduce its electricity usage by hundreds of thousands of dollars a year," according to a report in the New Hampshire Union Leader, and will also cut in GHG emissions of more than 1.600 tons of carbon dioxide per year. Lindt also expects to receive at least $200,000 in financial incentives annually during each of the next three years to encourage energy efficiency projects.

"Over the next few years, we will complete a number of renovations and construction projects that will enhance the efficiency of our processes, complement our ongoing sustainability efforts and help to lower our energy costs," said Davide Nico, vice president of operations at Lindt Chocolate USA. Plans include installation of a new energy-efficient central chiller plant and rooftop cooling units, a wastewater heat recovery system, state-of-the-art ventilation and LED lighting and controls throughout the plant.

This multi-year partnership is the first one Eversource has participated in as part of the NHSaves program, which is funded mostly by a charge paid by all Eversource customers in their monthly bills. The company is in talks with "maybe a half dozen to a dozen" New Hampshire commercial and industrial Eversource customers to expand the program, said Tilak Subrahmanian, vice president of energy efficiency for Eversource. He noted that the process is often "an education around the economics of this and how much money is being left on the table" from potential energy savings.
