Visa sets 100% RE Goal for 2019
Visa announced on Feb. 28 its commitment to use 100% renewable energy across its global operations by the end of 2019.
According to a statement from the company, Visa is joining the RE100 initiative, as well as the Rocky Mountain Institute’s Business Renewables Center. The company will also become a signatory to the Renewable Energy Buyers’ Principles, led by World Wildlife Fund.
Visa estimates that 35% of its global energy consumption currently comes from a mix of RE sources, including solar, wind and hydropower. In order to reach their 100% RE goal, the company said they will seek "impactful, local renewable electricity investments in markets where the company has major facilities, including four locations in the U.S. and the U.K. that account for 80 percent of its global electricity use." Visa also expects to transition the remainder of its footprint toward renewable energy.
"We are proud to play a role in driving the adoption of renewable energy," said Al Kelly, chief executive officer of Visa Inc. "For Visa, this announcement is an example of our longstanding commitment to operate as a responsible, ethical and sustainable company, while fostering economic growth."
Visa currently has an efficient electronics policy that mandates at least 90% of new electronics in its largest corporate campus offices meet either Energy Star or EPEAT certification standards. The company’s statement also noted, "Visa’s commitment builds on the company’s focus on implementing efficiency initiatives that reduce its use of energy at its data centers and offices. In its locations around the world, Visa continues to invest in energy efficiency measures, including LEED-based building design and operations, lighting upgrades, motion sensors."
