Intel reaches 3 million sq. ft. of solar arrays

"Imagine enough solar panels to cover 52 regulation U.S. football fields or 47 full-size soccer fields. (Intel) now estimates it has installed 3 million square feet of solar arrays at Intel sites in nine nations."

Intel reported reaching this milestone in a statement announcing the publication of its annual Corporate Responsibility Report. The company noted, "Today, 100 percent of the energy Intel uses in its chip manufacturing business in the U.S. and Europe comes from renewable sources: solar, hydro, wind." For the past decade, Intel said, the company has been the No. 1 or No. 2 corporate buyer of green power, according to the EPA.

Intel’s report explained, "Our long-standing commitment to environmental leadership helps us achieve efficiency, reduce costs, and respond to the needs of our customers and community stakeholders. We invest in conservation projects and set company-wide environmental targets, seeking to drive reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, energy use, water use, and waste generation."

Among the company’s current targets:

  • Reduce GHG emissions by 10% on a per-unit basis by 2020 from 2010 levels
  • Grow the installation and use of on-site alternative energy to three times our 2015 levels by 2020.
  • Continue 100% green power in our U.S. operations and increase alternative energy use for our international operations from 2015 to 2020.
  • Achieve cumulative energy savings of 4 billion kWh from 2012 to 2020.

Since 2012, Intel has invested more than $185 million in approximately 2,000 energy conservation projects at their facilities worldwide, cumulatively resulting in savings of 3 billion kWh of energy and more than $400 million through the end of 2017.
