Levi Strauss targets 100% RE, supply chain goals

Levi Strauss & Co. announced on July 31 a new climate action strategy, which includes a 100% renewable electricity target in company-owned facilities, a 90% reduction in GHG emissions in all owned-and-operated facilities, and a 40% reduction in GHG emissions in its supply chain, all by 2025.

"We believe that business has the opportunity and the responsibility to be a force for positive change in the world," said Chip Bergh, president and chief executive officer of Levi Strauss & Co., in a statement. “We are proud to be one of the first companies to set science-based targets for our global supply chain, and we hope to be an inspiration for others to follow.” The company’s GHG targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative.

Levi Strauss expects the 90% emissions reduction in owned-and-operated facilities will be achieved by investments in onsite renewable energy and energy efficiency upgrades. The supply chain target of a 40% reduction “will in large part be achieved by working with key suppliers to expand the International Finance Corporation’s Partnership for Cleaner Textiles (IFC PaCT) globally,” according to the statement. The IFC PaCT is a public-private partnership that provides suppliers with technical expertise and access to low-cost financing to support sustainable energy and water investments.
