Mercury Marine heads for 45% energy reduction goal

Mercury Marine, the Fond du Lac, Wisc.-based marine propulsion and technology company, announced it is making progress towards a 2019 goal to reduce annual energy consumption by 45% from a 2005 baseline. In the past year, the company reduced energy consumption by 5%, for a cumulative decline of 38% since 2005.

The announcement was included in the company’s 2018 Sustainability Report, released on Nov. 12. A statement from the company noted that in each of the major categories of its sustainability initiative, Mercury continues to meet and exceed its aggressive improvement goals.  “Sustainability is important as we set out to pursue our goals and be a marine leader,” said John Buelow, Mercury Marine vice president of global operations. “That means doing everything from having a positive impact on the environment, the products we develop and take to market are as clean as they can possibly be, how we operate our operations, and protecting the planet and having a positive impact on everyone we touch.”

The report said that energy consumption reductions have resulted from initiatives including the use of solar energy, LED lighting, natural lighting, heat recovery and re-use, prevention and repair of compressed-air leaks, and installation of double-door systems and storm doors.

Continuing progress toward the 2019 goal will also require ongoing promotion of an energy-smart culture among all Mercury employees. “If you go to any of our operations, there’s a lot of energy around what can we do from a sustainability perspective,” said John Pfeifer, Mercury Marine president. “From a sustainability standpoint, we have grown and the reason I believe we have grown is because everyone that works here cares about it.  It’s important to people.”
