Arsenal FC adds battery storage to stadium

Arsenal Football Club has installed a battery storage system at Emirates Stadium in London. The 3MW system will store enough energy to run the stadium for 90 minutes, the length of a match. The system is the largest at any sports ground in the UK.

“This is a big step forward for us in being efficient with energy usage, and building on our work in reducing our carbon footprint as an organization,” said Vinai Venkatesham, Arsenal’s managing director, in a statement on www.arsenal.com. “We have been powered by green energy since 2017 thanks to Octopus Energy, and the battery storage system will support our efforts further.”

The system was installed by Pivot Power, which will operate it for 15 years. According to the statement, the battery will generate income by providing services to the National Grid to help it balance supply and demand, which will be shared between Pivot Power, investment manager Downling LLP and the Club.
