Facebook to power Ga. data center with solar

Facebook will begin to supply its data center in Newton County, Ga., with 100% renewable energy through an agreement signed Nov. 19 with a local consumer-owned utility.

The 107 MW Snipesville II solar facility project will be funded, constructed, owned, operated and maintained by Silicon Ranch, an independent solar power producer, and is expected to come online in 2021.

The project developers say it will feature single-axis tracking technology across its 350,000 solar modules. The Snipesville II project will be developed in Jeff Davis County, Ga.

"We are excited to be partnering with Walton EMC and Silicon Ranch once again to bring additional solar energy to the Georgia grid," Urvi Parekh, Head of Renewable Energy at Facebook, said in a statement. "This new project will provide additional investment in rural Georgia, help us reach our goal of 100% renewable energy for all of our operations, and further strengthen the solar market in the region."

The Walton Electric Membership Corporation, whom Facebook selected to provide power to its Newton Data Center in March 2018, signed a contract with Silicon Ranch on behalf of Facebook for the new solar project.
