HelloFresh commits to offsetting 100% of emissions

HelloFresh announced April 13 that they will begin offsetting 100% of the CO2 emissions generated from its operations, outbound shipping and corporate travel across its U.S. brands.

The meal-kit company partnered with terrapass to execute a carbon offset initiative across its HelloFresh, Green Chef and EveryPlate brands starting with the 2020 calendar year. The project is expected to offset at least 50,000 metric tons of carbon and 24,000 MWh of electricity.

“Now more than ever before, people are relying on HelloFresh for fresh food deliveries,” Jeff Yorzyk, director of sustainability, said in a statement. “We want to take measurable steps to minimize our environmental impact and make meal kits an even more sustainable option for our customers. Our mission to change the way people eat disrupts a broken food system with needless greenhouse gas emissions by cutting out the middleman and drastically reducing food waste. We’re proud to partner with terrapass to offset 100% of our carbon emissions to tip the balance even further.”

HelloFresh has previously taken steps to reduce emissions associated with its delivery service and supply chain. They also estimate that their direct-to-consumer business model alone results in a carbon footprint that is 25% smaller than if the same meals were made from store-bought groceries.
