T-Mobile advances RE100 goal with 158 MW Illinois wind farm

T-Mobile announced April 21 a long-term contract for a 158 MW Illinois wind farm that began operation on March 1 and is expected to generate more than 504,100 MWh annually.

The telecommunications company completed the agreement with Avangrid Renewables for the Otter Creek Wind Farm in LaSalle County. The agreement also includes the purchase of national renewable energy credits.

“T-Mobile is all in on our commitment to using 100% renewable energy to offset the environmental impact of our operations — it’s the right thing to do for our business and our planet,” T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert said in a statement. “As the supercharged Un-carrier, T-Mobile will not just be a bigger company, but a better company — and sustainability partners like Avangrid Renewables are critical to achieving our goal of helping us clean up wireless for good!”

The Otter Creek Wind Farm features 38 Vestas 3.8 MW wind turbines and four Vestas 3.45 MW turbines across 10,000 acres, which is being leased from 76 farmland owners.

T-Mobile has previously committed to powering 100% of their operations with renewable energy by 2021 and in January 2018 joined RE100.
