Telefónica accelerates net zero goal to 2030
Spanish telecommunications company Telefónica announced June 5 that they are accelerating their previously established goal of net-zero emissions from 2050 to 2030 as they continue to find success in their climate strategies.
In 2019, the company was successful in reducing almost 50% of their emissions, a goal previously set for 2025. As they adjust their energy goals to be more aggressive, Telefónica is also committed to sourcing 85% renewable energy by 2025 and 100% by 2030. To achieve these renewable energy goals, the company plans to install renewable self-generation sites at isolated base stations and on their rooftops.
“In an increasingly connected world, digitalization is an excellent lever for accelerating many of the changes we must make in order to achieve this so-called green recovery,” the company wrote in a blog post celebrating World Environment Day. “Not only is this true for industrial processes, but also those that involve all citizens: working on the move, virtual meetings or even remote medical consultation; all this reduces carbon emissions. Digitization is the link that connects Europe’s recovery and plans for growth with the European Green Deal. At the same time, at Telefónica we are convinced that tackling the climate crisis will enable us to put people at the focal point and in balance with the great system which we are a part of. It will help create jobs and improve business competitiveness, as well as the health and quality of life of individuals.”
Telefónica reported that despite their data traffic increasing almost fourfold in the last four years, their energy consumption fell by 1% by implementing a network overhaul and various energy efficiency projects, such as reducing fossil fuel in their fleets and buildings, reinforcing preventive measures that minimize accidental coolant gas leaks and compensate for unavoidable emissions with carbon sequestration projects.
In 2019, Telefónica avoided 3.2 million tons of CO2 by implementing services like teleworking and video-conferencing apps, Smart Energy, Smart Lighting, Smart Parking (fleet management), cloud services, big data and AI. For every ton of carbon they emitted in 2019, customers saved 3.3 tons. They hope to reduce their carbon footprint by 10% before 2025 though such digitization strategies.
