Facebooks inks deal with Illinois wind farm

Facebook completed an agreement Aug. 6 with the Lincoln Land Wind project in Illinois to source approximately 170 MW of renewable energy from the 300 MW project.

The agreement was signed between the social media giant and Apex Clean Energy and makes Facebook Apex’s largest corporate customer by megawatt. This is Facebook’s third renewable energy deal with Apex in the past year.

“We are thrilled to partner with Apex once again to bring an additional 170 MW of new renewable energy to the grid,” Urvi Parekh, Head of Renewable Energy at Facebook, said in a statement. “At Facebook, we are committed to not only supporting our operations with 100% renewable energy, but to helping accelerate the transition to renewable energy. With our recent announcement of our new data center in DeKalb, we are excited to bring renewable energy to Illinois.”

The renewable energy supplied by the Lincoln Land Wind project will help Facebook toward their goal of supporting 100% of their operations in the region with renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 75%. In 2019, Facebook signed a 61.6 MW PPA for Apex’s Altavista Solar project and a 200 MW PPA with their Aviator Wind East project.

The Lincoln Land Wind project is expected to be operational in 2021. The remaining 130 MW produced by the project will be sold to another corporate offtaker, the name of which has not yet been announced.
