Shell and Microsoft collaborate on net zero carbon goals
Shell International Petroleum Company Limited and Microsoft Corporation announced Sept. 22 that they are teaming up on a collaboration to help the other achieve their net zero carbon goals and further support the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Under this agreement, Shell will supply Microsoft with renewable energy in pursuit of the tech giant’s goal of sourcing 100% clean energy by 2025.
Microsoft will, in return, continue working with Shell on the advancement of artificial intelligence technology to help the energy company access real-time data insights and improve the efficiency of their operations, leading to lower emissions. The two companies have been working on such AI technology for three years and have deployed 47 AI-powered proprietary applications across Shell’s businesses this year alone, including one such project that has shown potential to reduce emissions from their LNG operations.
Both companies will continue their work on the advancement of sustainable aviation fuels and on the creation of new digital tools that allow Shell to offer suppliers and customers support in reducing their carbon footprints.
“We are building on our work with Shell by establishing a deeper alliance to further accelerate innovation in support of decarbonization and energy industry transition,” Judson Althoff, executive vice president of Microsoft’s Worldwide Commercial Business, said in a statement. “Cross-industry collaborations like this are fundamental to help society reach net-zero emissions by 2050, and digital transformation is key to tackling this important issue, within the energy sector and beyond.”
