Medford, Ore., retrofits 8,000 city fixtures with LED lighting

The City of Medford, Ore., expects to reduce its energy consumption, maintenance costs and carbon emissions through a new $4 million contract for the installation of LED lighting in its street lights and park department lighting.

The city entered into the agreement with Ameresco, who will complete the project, using a low-interest, Energy Savings Performance Loan that Medford officials expect to make back through energy cost savings alone. The project includes the retrofitting of 8,000 light fixtures across the city with LED, spanning all city and utility-owned street lights.

“LED fixtures not only consume less energy, but they last four times longer than our current high-pressure sodium (HPS) lights,” Medford’s Transportation Manager, Karl MacNair, said in a statement. “The lighting conversion will save taxpayers money in energy costs and contribute to reducing the City’s carbon emissions.”

The City of Medford first began converting city lighting to LED in 2019, but this new project represents its biggest commitment to the conversion yet. The project is expected to be completed in 2021.
