United Natural Foods to establish science-based emissions reduction targets

United Natural Foods, Inc., announced Dec. 2 its intention to establish science-based emissions reduction targets covering its operations and value chain in line with the Paris Agreement as part of its 2030 ESG agenda.

The wholesale grocery distributor plans to create and submit these targets for approval to the Science Based Targets initiative within the next year. UNFI intends for these targets to be connected to commitments for investment in clean energy and increasing operational energy efficiency.

“Our commitment to setting science-based emissions reduction targets demonstrates our continued focus on reducing our environmental impact, conserving natural resources, and promoting sustainability in our operations and across our value chain,” Steven L. Spinner, UNFI Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said in a statement. “We are proud to be the first North American wholesale grocery distributor to align with SBTi. We take seriously the need for business accountability in solving this global challenge to ensure a healthy planet for future generations, while providing financial returns to our shareholders.”

UNFI has already been taking steps to limit its carbon footprint and participate in environmentally-minded practices. Earlier this year, the company joined the Climate Collaborative and in California, UNFI is piloting its first all-electric solar-powered refrigerated trailer to reduce the carbon footprint of its fleet.
