Long Beach School District Installs Solar Canopies
The Long Beach Unified School District installed solar canopies at 21 of its schools that will total over 4 MW of capacity once operational.
The projects were completed by Standard Solar in partnership with EMCOR Services Mesa Energy Systems. Fourteen of the installations are already operational; the remaining seven installations should be completed by October.
“Clean energy is an essential part of our district-wide sustainability efforts. Our partnership with Standard Solar will help reduce our carbon footprint while saving the district millions of dollars over the 25-year agreement,” Alan Reising, Long Beach Unified School District business services administrator, said in a statement.
In the first year of operation, the projects should offset the carbon equivalent of burning approximately six million pounds of coal. The solar canopies will help reduce the urban heat island (UHI) effect around the district, as well as minimize summertime peak energy demand, air-conditioning costs and air pollution.
