Tyson Foods Targets Global Net Zero by 2050
Tyson Foods announced June 9 its new target to reach net-zero emissions across its global operations and supply chain by 2050.
The food producer’s emissions targets have already been approved by the Science-Based Targets initiative. This new initiative builds on its previously set target to cut emissions by 30% by 2030.
“At Tyson Foods, we believe progress requires accountability and transparency and we are proud to exemplify that as we work to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050,” John Tyson, chief sustainability officer, said in a statement. “As the first U.S.-based protein company in the food and beverage sector to have an emissions reduction target approved by the Science Based Targets initiative, we hope to continue to push the industry as a leader and remain committed to making a positive impact on our planet, with our team members, consumers and customers, and in the communities we serve.”
To achieve this target, Tyson Foods intends to update its baseline emissions by the end of 2023 and eliminate deforestation risk within its global supply chain by 2030. The company plans to establish a pathway to 50% renewable energy use by 2030 for its domestic operations.
The company has also joined various initiatives to show its sustainability dedication, including the Net Zero Business Alliance and the Paris Agreement.
