GE Reports Progress on Sustainability Goals

With the release of its 2020 Sustainability Report, GE is tracking its progress to becoming a net-zero company by 2050—including not just GE’s operations, but also the Scope 3 emissions from the use of sold products.

“GE is committed to tackling the world’s biggest challenges with a clear alignment to sustainability—leading the energy transition to drive decarbonization, developing precision healthcare that personalizes diagnoses and treatments, and building a future of smarter and more efficient flight. We are dedicated to improving our impacts and lifting up our people, communities, and planet,” H. Lawrence Culp, Jr. Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of GE said in a statement summarizing the report.

Key initiatives include:

  • Achieving the majority of progress toward meeting the 2030 goal of carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and 2 emissions through absolute reductions of direct emissions and energy use through operational investments, smart power sourcing, and elimination of waste
  • GE employees using "Lean" principles to hold site-specific sustainability assessments, identify energy reduction opportunities and calculate and track costs and paybacks
  • Continuing to developing and to communicate details about more specific, nearer-term GE greenhouse gas reduction metrics and targets that include Scope 3 emissions

The report noted that as a company helping to generate one-third of the world’s electricity, GE plays a central role in meeting this demand while lowering the carbon intensity of energy and making energy more resilient. GE’s technology and expertise help customers meet their decarbonization goals. Beyond its technology, GE supports policies that promote ambitious greenhouse gas reduction goals aligned with the Paris Agreement.
