Bimbo Bakeries USA installing 1.075-MW solar system at California facility

Bimbo Bakeries USA said April 7 it will install a 1.075-MW solar energy project on rooftop and ground canopy structures at its Escondido, Calif., bakery this summer.

The approximately 3,150 solar panels are expected to produce 1,775,000 kWh of electricity annually, which will power 30% of the bakery's electricity.

The facility's 107,500-square-foot solar array will provide increased operational efficiency to the Escondido plant in addition to environmental benefits, Bimbo Bakeries USA said in a news release. The solar panels will reduce carbon dioxide emissions at Escondido by 981 tons per year, equivalent to providing one year of electricity for 156 homes.

"We are excited to further our commitment to sustainability by introducing solar technology to our facilities," said James McKeown, Bimbo Bakeries USA's director of sustainability,  in a statement. "We are always looking for new opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint and lead by example with our sustainable projects."

The company's brands include Arnold, Bimbo, Boboli, Brownberry, Entenmann's, Freihofer's, Heiners, Marinela, Mrs Baird's, Nature's Harvest, Oroweat, Sara Lee, Stroehmann, Thomas' and Tia Rosa.
