McDonald's, Simon pilot new digital energy system

McDonald's Corp. and Simon Property Group are piloting a new digital energy management solution designed to provide commercial and industrial companies with better data about their energy use that can be used to drive savings.

The tool, which is a product of General Electric's recently launched energy-as-a-service business Current, is designed to allow C&I facilities to monitor their energy use "from lighting to HVAC systems," in real-time, the company said in a Nov. 16 news release unveiling the product. That feature is supported by a software system that enables historic as well as predictive and prescriptive analytics and is built on GE's industrial internet software platform, "Predix."

Simon Property Group, which owns, manages and developments shopping malls across the U.S., said it expects the system — combined with Simon's already installed efficiency solutions such as LEDs — will help it reduce consumption at The Westchester, a mall it operates in White Plains, N.Y., by about 20%.

"This connected, real-time view of how, when and where energy is being used enables our site managers to take actions to reduce and shift energy away from the grid during peak periods, saving significant monthly costs," said Michael Romstad, executive vice president of property management for Simon.

McDonald's said in a statement that the tool is providing actionable analysis around its energy use and other data that helps it enhance the customer experience.

"This intelligence provides infinite possibilities that include optimizing labor, reducing operational tension and improving overall efficiencies and effectiveness at the restaurants, all while creating sustainable, profitable growth," McDonald's Vice President of U.S. Operations James Floyd said in a statement.

Increasingly, Current said, entities are seeing the benefits of building automation and are seeking out connectivity. Current acquired controls provider Daintree Networks earlier this year.
