Google-supported Texas wind project changes hands

About a year after Google announced its signing of a 225 MW wind PPA with developer Invenergy, the project has been sold to Southern Co. subsidiary Southern Power.

Google — which first announced the deal in late 2015 deal as part of its a larger acquisition total 842 MW of renewable energy across three countries — has contracted for the majority of the electricity and associated renewable energy credits generated by the 279-MW Bethel Wind Energy Center in Texas under a long-term agreement. Google said at the time that the deals would provide renewable energy to help support its data center operations; more recently, Google announced in December 2016 it will its goal of powering its global operations entirely with100% renewable energy this year.

Southern Power, through its subsidiaries, will retain the remainder of the electricity and associated RECs, which it may keep or sell, the company said in a Jan. 9 news release

With the addition of the Bethel Wind Energy Center, Southern Power says it now owns more than 3,200 MW of renewable generation across 36 solar, wind and biomass facilities either announced, acquired or under construction. As the unregulated electric power arm of Southern Co., Southern Power has been ramping up the amount of green power in its generation mix and expanding its other services aimed at commercial and industrial energy users over the past few years; In total,  the Southern Co. system has added or announced more than 6,500 MW of renewable generation since 2012.
