Puerto Rico looks to rebuild with Tesla, private sector
As Puerto Rico continues to struggle in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, which all but disintegrated the U.S. territory's electric grid, Bloomberg News reported that it has been in "serious talks" with Tesla and other companies about rebuilding its grid with advanced, distributed energy technologies.
Utility Dive reported Oct. 24 that the island's utility, PREPA, has not generated more than 20% of normal demand since the Category 4 hurricane hit. Additionally, renewable energy and energy storage companies such as Tesla and Sonnen have committed to helping Puerto Rico recover.
According to Bloomberg News, both Tesla and Sonnen, along with GmbH, Arensis Group and Sunnova Energy, have all been in talks with officials in Puerto Rico regarding plans to rebuild an advanced electricity grid on the island instead of repairing its current infrastructure. The news agency said the territory would likely use a competitive bidding process to identify partners.
