Lyft to purchase carbon offsets

Lyft, the on-demand transportation company, announced that all Lyft rides will now be carbon neutral.

A report in Smart Cities Dive noted that "the commitment will be made through direct funding of emission mitigation efforts." Lyft reports the plan to be a multi-million dollar investment in the first year alone.  The report explained that the emission mitigation efforts included the reduction of emissions in the automotive manufacturing process, renewable energy programs, forestry projects and the capture of emissions from landfills. All efforts will be U.S.-based and verified by 3Degrees.

In a blog post announcing the plan, John Zimmer and Logan Green, Lyft co-founders, explained this step as the latest in a line of climate impact actions, including a goal to reduce CO2 emissions for the U.S. transportation sector as a whole by at least five million tons per year by 2025.  They also announced that all electric autonomous vehicles operating on the Lyft platform would be powered by 100% renewable energy.
