Rolls-Royce Power Systems invests in microgrids

Rolls-Royce Power Systems announced Monday that it will begin investing in the Berlin-based energy storage startup Qinous, marking the beginning of the company's shift from diesel and gas energy assets to microgrids and energy storage.

The company, a division of Rolls-Royce plc, which specializes in large diesel engines and propulsion systems and distributed power generation plants, expects that the investment in clean generator options will expand its existing product portfolio and strengthen global sales. Qinous has experience with battery storage and microgrids through more than 30 projects worldwide, including projects that integrate systems provided by Rolls-Royce.

"We have identified our customers’ needs in terms of autonomous energy supply systems that are efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly," Andreas Schell, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, said in a statement. "In addition to the diesel and gas gensets supplied by MTU Onsite Energy, together with our partners like Qinous we will now offer battery containers, including renewable power generation plants, and combine that with intelligent control. This strengthens our position as a provider of innovative power solutions able to supply our customers with microgrid systems tailored to their specific requirements."

By investing in energy storage and microgrid systems, the company will be supporting technology the allows cleaner and more cost-effective renewable energies and provide its customers with more efficient energy options.
