Target’s light bulb moment

Target Corporation announced that more than 2 million LED fixtures are currently in place across nearly all 1,800-plus Target stores nationwide and that these fixtures will now be added to every new store opened by the company, which expects this strategy to reduce energy use at their stores by 10% annually.

“At Target, we’re committed to using our size and scale to create a better tomorrow, and installing energy-efficient LED lights in stores across the country is another example of following through on that goal,” said John Leisen, Target’s vice president of property management. “These lights will save enough energy each year to power a small city, helping leave our planet in better shape for future families.”

The lighting system, installed in partnership with Acuity Brands, also feature built-in technology that interacts with the Target app so that shoppers who opt-in can map their way through the store on a mobile phone. “Think of it as GPS for your shopping experience!, the company explained in a blog post.

LED fixtures will be added in the coming years to hundreds of Target parking lots, stockrooms, and other store spaces. The move is part of helping Target reach the company's recently announced GHG emissions reduction and energy efficiency goals.
