North American cement company signs 100% renewables deal

A leading supplier and producer of cement and concrete in the United States, Mexico, and Canada signed a long-term agreement that will provide solar and wind power to its Odessa, Tex., cement plant, which will cover 100% of the electricity used in its operations.

Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua (GCC) predicts that the 10-year fixed-price agreement will reduce its CO2 emissions by approximately 45,000 metric tons and decrease the current electricity price for the plant by 22%, which equates to about $4.6 million in total savings for this period, according to a news release.

GCC produces approximately 5 million tons of cement annually between its U.S. and Canada plants.
