West Coast Six Flags makes the switch to solar power

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom became the first theme park on the west coast to be powered by renewable energy when it switched on its new 7.5 MW solar carport on Nov. 30.

The Vallejo, Calif., park hosted its 12th annual Holiday in the Park event, attended this year by Congressman Mike Thompson and Vallejo Mayor Bob Sampayan to celebrate the official switching on of the new system, which will provide 80% of the park’s energy usage. The solar carport was built over the main guest parking lot and is expected to produce 11.9 million kWh of energy and offset 8,400 tons of carbon dioxide annually.

“We are thrilled to be introducing the nation’s first solar-powered Holiday in the Park events,” Senior Vice President of US Park Operations Tom Iven said in a statement. “The marvelous wonder of this special time of year truly comes alive in our parks with a smorgasbord of seasonal delights to see and experience.”

In addition to one of the largest solar carport installations in the country, the park’s holiday light display also features millions of LED lights.
