Schnitzer Steel targets 25% emissions reduction

Schnitzer Steel released Dec. 17 their 2019 Sustainability Report, containing their 2025 energy targets including a goal to reduce emissions from auto and metals recycling by 25% and achieve 90% carbon-free electricity.

The report also highlights their sustainability in production, including the benefits of recycling scrap metal and reducing the need for intensive mining of virgin materials for use in steel manufacturing. According to Schnitzer’s report, steel made from scrap metal uses 74% less energy than steel made with iron ore and coal.

“Schnitzer’s sustainable business model has never been more important than it is today. As global trends continue to support the growth of lower carbon-based economies, the demand for metal-based products, especially those produced by recycled materials, will increase significantly in the years ahead,” Tamara Lundgren, President and CEO, said in a statement. “As other stakeholders continue to communicate their focus on sustainability, Schnitzer is proactively working with companies and communities in their efforts to reduce their carbon footprint and improve the environmental impact of their activities.”

The report also details their Pick-n-Pull stores, where end-of-life vehicles are available for the reuse of parts. A large part of Schnitzer’s environmental initiatives includes the reuse of materials.

“Our sustainability strategy is focused on empowering our employees to make a meaningful difference through their daily work,” Brian Lewallen, Chief Sustainability Officer, said. “By applying our sustainability principles, our employees, individually and collectively, will help us achieve our ambitious and long-term sustainability goals.”
