Mercedes-Benz launches blockchain to track supplier emissions

Mercedes-Benz launched Jan. 30 a project to increase transparency on emission in their supply chain by using blockchain technology to track emissions throughout the value chain.

The automaker teamed up with Circulor, a startup specializing in blockchain technology,  as part of STARTUP AUTOBAHN to track supply chain emissions and document if the sustainability standards of parent company Daimler are passed on throughout the entire supply chain. The initiative is working alongside “Ambition2039”, Mercedes-Benz’s mission to have a carbon-neutral new passenger car fleet within 20 years to ensure a carbon-free production cycle.

“With Ambition2039, Mercedes-Benz Cars has set itself high goals,” Markus Schäfer, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG, said in a statement. “We can only get there in close cooperation with our suppliers. The key is transparency: It is our aspiration to make all processes transparent and traceable. We are the first manufacturer to use blockchain technology to map CO2 emissions in the global battery cell supply chain. In doing so, we are laying the cornerstone for effective improvements – for the environment and for our businesses.”

By mapping the production flow of materials, the amount of recycled materials in the supply chain and the associated CO2 emissions, Mercedes-Benz is pursuing a circular economy and working to close material cycles.

Additionally, Mercedes-Benz is conducting workshops with suppliers to identify effective CO2 reduction measures, beginning with materials with high associated CO2 production, like battery cells, steel and aluminum.
