Chesapeake College reduces energy intensity by 24%
Chesapeake College has successfully reduced energy intensity by 24% since 2011, reaching its goal of 20% eight years early, and saved more than $250,000 per year in energy costs as they pursue their target of carbon neutrality in campus operations by 2025.
The Wye Mills, Md.-based college was recognized by the U.S. DOE for these achievements. Chesapeake College first set their target of reducing energy use by at least 20% within 10 years when they joined the DOE’s Better Buildings Challenge alongside more than 360 U.S. countries.
Chesapeake College achieved this energy use reduction by taking measures like equipment upgrades, efficiency education programs and new building and system operations scheduling across the campus. Additionally, they completed a 1.8 MW solar array with a 1 MW battery backup system through a PPA with the local utility, a project that is expected to be developed into a partial campus microgrid in the future.
Their Theon-campus LEED Platinum-certified Health Professions and Athletic Center has also achieved 51% annual energy savings through measures that include onsite geothermal heating and cooling, a solar installation, high-efficiency HVAC equipment and energy-efficiency building materials.
