MetLife achieves all 2020 sustainability targets

MetLife announced June 17 that they achieved all their 2020 environmental goals on target, including becoming carbon neutral, reducing energy consumption by 10% since 2012 and reducing location-based emissions by 10% since 2012.

The insurance company reduced energy consumption across their global footprint by 33% and reduced location-based emissions by 27% from a 2012 baseline. MetLife achieved their carbon neutrality goal in 2016 but has maintained that progress into 2020. The company outlined their more recent successes in their annual sustainability report. This year, they also achieved their target of requiring 100 of their top suppliers to disclose greenhouse gas emissions and reduction activities.

Additionally, MetLife reported that in 2019 they installed 86 charging stations for free employee use across most of their U.S. offices and retrofitted more than 9,500 LED light bulbs at offices globally.

“MetLife works every day to build a more sustainable world,” President and CEO Michel Khalaf said in a statement. “That has been the nature of our business for over 152 years. We make and keep long-term promises that sustain individuals, families and communities — and we make long-term investments that sustain economic prosperity.”

In 2019, MetLife increased the amount of Responsible Investments under their management by more than 10% year over year, from more than $52 billion in 2018 to more than $58 billion in 2019.
