McDonald's plans EV charging installations at UK Drive-Thrus

McDonald’s announced June 29 that they will be installing electric vehicle charging stations across new and existing Drive-Thru restaurants in the United Kingdom.

The charging points will have the capacity to charge at 125 kW and will be installed through U.K. EV charger producer InstaVolt. The locations will allow McDonald’s customers to get an 80% charge in just 20 minutes.

“Appetite for electric vehicles, which will be a central part of the UK’s efforts to build back greener post COVID-19, is growing,” Paul Pomroy, CEO of McDonald’s U.K. & Ireland, said in a statement. “This partnership and ambition takes advantage of our scale, and is a real step forward for those already driving electric vehicles, as well as people considering making the switch.”

Part of InstaVolt’s funding comes from the U.K. government’s £400m Charging Infrastructure Investment Fund. As the U.K. works to rebuild their economy post-Covid-19, they have shifted focus to increasing the electric vehicle market in the country and boosting low carbon industries and infrastructure.

The first wave of installations will be announced as they become available.
