EVRAZ steel mill to source from 300 MW Colorado solar farm

EVRAZ North America will soon power their Pueblo, Colo., steel mill with solar power from a new 300 MW project that was recently financed in a $285 million deal.

Lightsource bp closed the financing package for the Bighorn Solar project, which will be located on the EVRAZ Rocky Mountain Steel mill property in Pueblo. The power from the solar plant will be sold to Xcel Energy, the utility that provides electricity to the EVRAZ steel mill.

The construction contractor, McCarthy Building Companies, will be installing 750,000 solar panels across 1,600 acres of land occupied mostly by the steel mill but also private landowners and the City of Pueblo.

“EVRAZ Pueblo will be the first steel mill in North America to rely on solar power as we proudly use renewable energy to turn recycled scrap metal into new, clean steel, including the most sustainable rail in the world,” Skip Herald, President and Chief Executive Officer of EVRAZ North America, said in a statement.

Construction has begun on the project and it is expected to reach commercial operation by late 2021. The developers intend for the project to contribute to Colorado’s goal of achieving 100% renewable energy in the state by 2040.
