Knight-Swift looks to improving vehicle technology to achieve emissions goal

Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings reported in its new sustainability report that it is pursuing an interim target of a 5% reduction in emissions by 2025 along the way to its previously made target of a 50% reduction by 2035.

The truckload transportation provider intends to cut its emissions by investing in technology that improves the engine and fuel efficiency of its trucks. So far it has installed Start-Stop idle reduction technology in 55% of its tractors and has a plan to install this technology in its entire fleet over the next three years.

Knight-Swift is also working to implement next-generation trailer aerodynamic solutions, optimize diesel emissions with new cleaner-burning solutions and implement various other strategies as technology is further developed. In the long-term, the company plans to convert its fleet to battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicles once cost-effective models are available in the market and there is sufficient charging infrastructure.

“Corporate sustainability has never been more important to us as we navigate these historic times,” CEO Dave Jackson said in a statement. “We are proud of the progress we have made in improving our carbon footprint and creating a safe environment for our employees. We continue to invest in technologies that reduce carbon emissions, enhance our safety performance, and improve the efficiencies of our operations. These investments coupled with our culture of high expectations and commitment to developing our people allow us to deliver results for our shareholders, customers, and the communities that we serve.”
