Google to source power for data centers from new Tenn. solar plant

A new 100 MW solar facility that will provide power to Google’s Clarksville, Ala., data center is now under development in Obion County, Tenn.

The project is being developed by solar developer Origis Energy using the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Green Invest program, which aims to help develop renewable energy projects that will have large commercial offtakers such as Google. It is estimated that the Green Invest program has generated $1.4 billion in economic activity in TVA’s service area in the past two years.

“This Tennessee solar milestone is another demonstration of the success of TVA’s Green Invest partnership,” Johan Vanhee, Origis Energy chief commercial officer and chief procurement officer, said in a statement. “Such utility innovations are helping Google reach its aim to be the first major company to operate carbon free by 2030. We are very pleased to add 100 megawatts to this goal while contributing to the economic development of Obion County.”

It is estimated that the solar facility will be operational by the end of 2022. Google has also previously purchased 266 MW of solar power generated through the TVA electric grid to power its data centers.
