Amazon Web Services joins partnership for EV management platform development

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced March 29 that it is teaming up with ABB to develop a cloud-based system for optimizing the management of electric vehicle fleets.

ABB will provide energy management technology expertise and AWS will contribute its portfolio of cloud technologies and software. The partnership is meant to promote the transition to electric transport fleets globally, while allowing fleet operators to maintain 100% business continuity.

The new platform is expected to be released in the second half of 2021 and will focus on making EV fleet management more efficient by offering EV charge point and fleet data on a single dashboard. ABB noted that most fleet operators usually opt for third-party charging management software, which tends to be less scalable and secure as EV technology expands.

“As industries forge ahead with electrification of their vehicle fleets, customers need reliable and intuitive services to help them adapt to the new operating model and optimize how they utilize their fleets. This collaboration between AWS and ABB will combine our companies’ deep expertise in the automotive, logistics, and electrification spaces with leadership in the cloud to deliver a hardware-agnostic, intelligent electric fleet management solution,” Jon Allen, director of professional services for automotive at AWS, said in a statement. “Together, ABB and AWS will bring the insights, agility, and scale the cloud provides to the electric vehicle industry and help our customers successfully transition to a lower-emission future.”

ABB created a venture in Berlin focused on developing scalable fleet management technology that works with any vehicle type and charging infrastructure with the help of AWS. The technology will use machine learning and analytics to provide charge planning and real-time monitoring, in addition to EV route optimization.
