Physicians Realty Targets 40% Emissions Drop by 2030

Physicians Realty Trust announced in its new sustainability report that it is committed to reducing emissions 40% from 2018 levels by 2030.

The healthcare real estate company also reported progress toward its 2021 goals, including a 10% energy use cut and 10% emissions cut target. At the end of 2020, the company had reduced energy use 6.6% from its baseline. Additionally, it has reduced emissions 7.5% from the baseline.

“We are proud to share that the challenges of 2020 did not change our commitment to our ESG goals,” John Thomas, president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “Instead, we deepened our focus and enhanced our efforts, recognizing the critical need to invest in healthy physical and social spaces for our communities now more than ever.”

Other achievements in 2020 included LED retrofits at healthcare centers, the execution of a climate risk assessment and building automation upgrades. Physicians Realty plans to begin offsetting its remaining energy usage with renewable energy beginning in 2021.

In the future, the company established a goal to recommit to multi-year emissions targets in 2022 and beyond.

The progress made in 2020 was recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy.
