LG Commits to Eliminate Emissions from Product Use by 2030

LG Electronics announced Aug. 11 its ambition to eliminate emissions associated with the use of its products, which previously accounted for more than 80% of its greenhouse gas emissions, by 2030.

With this announcement, the Korean tech company is joining the “Business Ambition for 1.5°C” campaign, led by the Science Based Targets initiative, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute, and World Wide Fund for Nature. LG found that a large part of its emissions come from the use of LG products like refrigerators, washing machines and residential air conditions by consumers.

“LG's current activities are in line with our mid- to long-term ESG strategy to produce eco-friendly products and services for future generations,” Kim Joon-ho, executive vice president and head of LG Electronics' Quality Management Center, said in a statement. “LG is actively working on environmental solutions focusing on the themes of net zero and circular economy that contribute to a better tomorrow so future generations can enjoy a better life.”

This new ambition builds on LG’s initiative to reach zero carbon by 2030, a goal set by the company in 2019. This target also includes reducing total direct and indirect emissions from the production process 50% between 2017 and 2030.

The new target to eliminate emissions throughout a product’s production and use process will now be reviewed and validated by SBTi.
