AgroAmerica Releases Sustainability Update

AgroAmerica Tropical Oil released Aug. 16 its new corporate sustainability report, assessing the implementation of various environmental initiatives.

The tropical oil producer concluded in the report that its operations could be considered carbon neutral as the size of its palm plantations mean the amount of carbon that can be sequestered exceeds its operational emissions.

The report also details that the company generated 3.5 MWh of renewable electricity in 2020 from a system that generates power from biogas captured from its wastewater treatment plant in northern Guatemala. AgroAmerica invested $3.6 million in renewable energy generation in 2020.

Additionally, the company invested $1.2 million into a biodiversity project in its operational regions and ensured that 100% of its operations comply with environmental policies, which have been monitored by external parties.

AgroAmerica is now undergoing a process to estimate its greenhouse gas emissions to establish a baseline for the creation of an emissions reduction plan. Employees have been trained in the company’s environmental policies and in operational efficiencies in the hope of establishing better environmental practices.

“We have taken more time, effort, and resources to prepare and publish our sustainability report due to the implementation of new methodologies to better measure and present how we create sustainable value,” Javier Aguirre, corporate director of AgroAmerica, said in a statement. “In this challenging year, we updated the pillars of our Corporate Sustainability Strategy to align business priorities and the changing expectations of our stakeholders.”
