Nomad Foods Sets Science-Based 25% Emissions Reduction Target

Nomad Foods Limited announced Sept. 9 its new science-based targets to reduce its absolute emissions by 25% by 2025.

In addition to targeting its Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions from purchased goods, transportation and distribution, the European frozen food company is also seeking to work with its suppliers to ensure that 75% of them have their own science-based targets by 2025. The company, which also is the parent company of US brand Birds Eye, hopes to reach a 45% reduction in emissions per ton of product produced during this time frame.

These targets have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative. The company most recently measured an 11% reduction in absolute emissions in 2020, mostly due to a decrease in production as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nomad Foods is also on track to reach 100% renewable electricity use in all its factories by October 2021. These targets are all in the pursuit of net-zero operations by 2050.

“Every day, millions of households enjoy products from Birds Eye, Findus, iglo and our other leading brands and we want to ensure that when consumers choose our products it’s a positive choice for them and for the planet,” CEO Stéfan Descheemaeker said in a statement. “We have a diverse supply chain that spans from fisheries to farming and accounts for almost 80% of our greenhouse gas emissions. I’m very proud of the work we are doing to collaborate with suppliers and deliver the wider change needed to help consumers eat sustainably.”
