Goodyear to Transition All Europe and Turkey Sites to 100% RE

The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company announced Sept. 22 that it will use 100% renewable energy to power its plants in Europe and Turkey.

The tire company is targeting 100% renewable energy use at all its facilities in Europe, Middle East and Africa by 2022. Goodyear plans to purchase approximately 700,000 MWh of renewable electricity for use in its plants in France, Germany, Luxembourg, Poland, Slovenia, Turkey and the Netherlands.

The company hopes that this shift will reduce its carbon footprint by up to 260,000 tons. Reaching these targets will also help Goodyear reach its long-term goal of reducing carbon emissions intensity by 25% by 2023, since 2010. The company just reported a 19% reduction in energy intensity in 2020.

Goodyear will procure Guarantee of Origins for all electricity purchased to ensure its source and plans for its energy to come from a mix of hydro, wind, solar and geothermic biomass sources.

“Switching to 100% renewable electricity at these production facilities fits perfectly with our commitment to reduce our carbon footprint,” Chris Delaney, president of Goodyear EMEA, said in a statement. “Furthermore, this decision shows that we are taking serious steps to continuously reduce Goodyear's environmental impacts which is vitally important to ensure a better future for us all.”
