New York Plans 3 GW of Offshore Wind Installations

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) completed Jan. 14 purchase agreements for two additional offshore wind projects to produce electricity for the state.

The authority signed the Purchase and Sale Agreements (PSAs) with Equinor and bp for their Empire Wind 2 and Beacon Wind 1 projects. The contracts were first awarded in January 2021, and the concluding agreement of sale represents one of the largest renewable energy procurements in the U.S. to date.

Equinor is currently pursuing a target of installing 12-16 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, while this deal represents 3.3 GW of offshore wind power that Equinor and bp will be generating for New York State. The Empire Wind 2 and Beacon Wind 1 projects will provide energy capacity of 1,260 MW and 1,230 MW, respectively.

Equinor will also be transforming South Brooklyn Marine Terminal and the Port of Albany into manufacturing and assembly facilities during the process.

“Offshore wind is bringing unprecedented investment to New York State, and we are proud to further cement ourselves as the offshore wind hub of the nation,” Doreen M. Harris, president and CEO of NYSERDA, said in a statement. “Meeting our nation-leading offshore wind goal of 9,000 megawatts by 2035 will be an essential economic driver for the state, and these projects will help transform our energy system while providing thousands of family-sustaining jobs to bolster our growing green economy.”
