Northern Trust Lowers Emissions, Sets 2050 Goal

Northern Trust reduced its emissions by more than 69% since its 2015 baseline and lowered its energy consumption by over 46% as of Dec. 31, 2021.

The financial institution made the commitment to be net-zero carbon by 2050 using the 2019 baseline and plans to reduce its carbon emissions, as well as expanding the types of emissions that are disclosed, such as the recent additions of water and waste emissions data.

Details were provided in the company's latest Sustainability Report.

“Sustainability is about how we operate as a business and as citizens in the broader global community,” Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Michael O’Grady said in a statement. “As we fulfill our mission to be our clients’ most trusted financial partner, we continue to look at the long-term well-being of our employees, clients, shareholders and the communities in which we live and work.”
